This is the only known image of the Turkish bath cooling-room on the RMS Titanic. All other images which claim to
show the Titanic's cooling-room are, in fact, showing the one on the RMS Olympic. According to Ken Marschall, 'Although the motif was identical, Olympic's cooling room was laid out entirely differently…1
The plan on the left looks upwards towards the cubicles at the top, and roughly indicates which part of the room appears in the photograph.
Parks
Stephenson has been producing renders of parts of the Titanic for many years as
James Cameron's various dives add to our knowledge base. This render
shows the drinking fountain at the opposite end of the
room to the dressing cubicles. Partly visible behind the
central deckchair is the weighing-chair. A slightly different viewpoint
is available on
Stephenson's own website, where a fascinating description of how each render
was tackled is well worth reading.
The plan on the left looks upwards towards the drinking fountain at the top, and roughly indicates which part of the room appears in the
render. In use, the weighing-chair's position has changed.
This
render by Parks Stephenson shows the wall with the three dressing cubicles, the
dressing table and a couple of octagonal side tables, one for each couch. To the
right is the door to the attendants' locker. The coloured floor tiles show how
much more is known about the baths since the
earlier render of
those on the Olympic, which was made before the 2005 dive.
The plan on the left looks upwards towards the cubicles at the top, and roughly indicates which part of the room appears in the
render. This is approximately the same part of the room shown in the underwater
Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) sourced image shown below.
Ken Marschall's wonderful wide-angled mosaic was laboriously assembled from numerous individual closer views, and then enhanced to optimise the image. The individual views were taken during James Cameron's 2005 (ROV) underwater exploration.
Bruce Beveridge for permission to reproduce his plan of F Deck
Ken Marschall for permission to use his mosaic based on James Cameron images
Parks Stephenson for permission to use his renderings of the Titanic cooling-room, and
his help and encouragement over several years. His Titanic website is a must see.
