An ottoman
< Victorian catalogue of household furnishings Studio Editions, 1994; No.321

An ottoman is an upholstered seat, usually without back or arms.

Sometimes the seat formed the lid of a storage chest. In the late 19th century they could also be circular or octagonal, as at Whitehaven Turkish baths, with a central surface designed to hold a plant or statue.
