The first hot room seems rather formally—not to say regimentally—laid out, though the picture was probably taken before the bath opened and one suspects that the arrangement quickly became less formal as friends met up. The room measured 18x24 ft making the full width of each arch 8 foot. There are no tables even for a glass of water and this too must surely have changed once the baths were in use.
