In 1884, Mr J H Mann, proprietor of the Charlemont Arms Hotel and Turkish baths, became ill and tried unsuccessfully to sell them. As a result, his wife Mary must have increasingly taken over their operation until four years later when he died. She continued to do so for another two years but, in the summer of 1890, decided to try again for a sale.
Either there were no buyers, or the price was not right on one side or the other, but for whatever reason, Mary remained the owner for at least another two years. However, by the autumn of 1894, the hotel was finally under a completely new management.
