Political cartoons: Arthur Norris:
the Dardanelles

A cartoon by the less well-known Punch artist, Arthur Norris. It was published during World War I on 10 March 1915 when the Dardanelles were being attacked by the British and their French allies. This was just after what appeared to be a promising start, and just before the 15 March when the second phase of the attack turned into an allied failure.
Norris portrays the animosity of a newsvendor towards the totally innocent sandwich-board man advertising a London Turkish baths establishment which had no more connection with anything Turkish than a Scotch egg has with Scotland or a Welsh rarebit with Wales.
