Sir Edward Burne-Jones is more usually thought of in connection with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but has more recently become known also for his less serious work.
Like his friend William Morris, he visited Turkish baths, and this pen and ink sketch probably dates from the 1880s.
His less well-known son, Sir Philip Burne-Jones, also sketched a Turkish bath in a letter to a friend, Mrs Hamilton. This, however, was of his imagined view of her husband ridding himself of a cold by using a crinoline Turkish bath at their home.
