The image, painted by Edward Walter Webb in 1833, shows Lieutenant West, First Regiment Life Guards, and his horse, in a loose box. This seemingly strange name (for those of us who are non-riders), and one which is now more frequently written as a single word, is defined in Collins English Dictionary as being an enclosed and covered stall with a door in which an animal can be confined.
