This is the scene in George Bernard Shaw's play Misalliance (1909-1910) where an uninvited guest (Gunner) is discovered by wealthy houseowner John Tarleton hiding in his newly purchased cabinet Turkish bath.
The play is set in an Edwardian country house in Hindhead, Surrey, in 1909 when such cabinet baths were still popular. Compared with some of those shown elsewhere on this site, this bath was of a better quality than most.
Owen Carey's photograph shows Darius Pierce (Gunner) and Kenneth Albers (Tarleton) in the Portland (Oregon) Center Stage production at the Gerding Theater at The Armory in 2007. Darius Pierce is currently playing (24 Nov-29 Dec) at the same theatre in The Santaland Diaries.
