'The ladies ought to have

at least three nights in the week'

Table:

Victorian Turkish bath establishments

with facilities for women

Explanation

The Turkish baths listed here are mainly those open to the general public. Those in members' clubs, hydros, hotels, etc, have not been included.

Women's facilities were definitely available during the year indicated, although not necessarily during the whole life of the establishment.

Prices (in the same year) relate to class categories and /or hours of use.

W & M denotes that separate facilities were available for women and that, in general, the women’s and men’s facilities were open for approximately the same number of half-day units each week.

For establishments where facilities were shared, the W/M ratio is an approximation of the number of half-day units available to women and men each week, except that for baths open to women each morning the ratio (indicated by Hr) is calculated in hours.

* There are still Turkish baths on this site, though not necessarily the same ones.
